Iowa Governor Chet Culver Campaigning on the Taxpayer Dime?

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 09:30 PM PDT

Boone, IA National Guard Co. B 248th Homecomin...

It would be tempting for an incumbent to do this, and former Governor Terry Branstad is calling Governor Chet Culver on doing that very thing.  They point out he had only twenty official campaign appearances, but yet traveled the state attacking Governor Branstad.  They note Governor Culver's schedule today that lists five appearances around the state touting I-Jobs that happens to coincide with a campaign commercial released that also touts I-Jobs.  This afternoon in a press release they quote him directly from an event that took place in Cedar Rapids:

Reporter: "Is there anything you can do to make sure that something like this egg recall we had doesn't happen again?"

Culver: "Yes. Make sure we don't elect Terry Branstad on November 2nd."

Culver followed this by repeating the same, ridiculous charges regarding Jack DeCoster that he made during last night's debate.

Governor Culver tried to dismiss the charges, and even though Branstad pointed out the difference it doesn't look like he plans to change anytime soon.  From Eastern Iowa Government:

Culver dismissed the suggestion and called the trip official business…

…"It's different when you go for a ribbon cutting of a business you brought as opposed to just going around to tout a political program that is obviously the big difference in this campaign," he said. "That is really a political issue. It is not an economic development issue at this point. He's out there talking politics. It's not about working with a community to bring a business or jobs to the community at all."

Culver doesn't plan to make any changes in his official appearances.

"I'm going to talk about Branstad and his failed record of the past every day between now and Nov. 2," he said.

Governor Culver, as long as the taxpayers of Iowa are not footing the bill.  If they have, your campaign needs to reimburse the state.

Harry Reid’s Pet Chris Coons

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 03:30 PM PDT

image This is uber-creepy, from The Hill:

"I’m going to be very honest with you — Chris Coons, everybody knows him in the Democratic caucus. He’s my pet. He’s my favorite candidate," Reid said.

"Let me tell you about him: A graduate of Yale Divinity School. Yale Law School. A two-time national debate champion. He represents two-thirds of the state now, in an elected capacity. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen him or heard him speak, but he is a dynamic speaker. I don’t mean loud or long; he’s a communicator. So that’s how I feel about Delaware. I’ve always thought Chris Coons is going to win. I told him that and I tried to get him to run. I’m glad he’s running. I just think the world of him. He’s my pet."

He said it not only once, but twice.  Does anyone else find it strange that the Senate Majority Leader refers to the Democrat candidate for Senate in Delaware as "my pet."  It's reminds me of a certain former Senator out in his neck of the woods.  Definitely has a man-crush thing going on here.  Meredith Jessup at The Blaze coined a new Christine O'Donnell campaign slogan – "Christine O'Donnell – NOT Harry Reid's pet."  Michelle Malkin has the perfect campaign poster idea.

Iowa Secretary of State Michael Mauro Lies About Photo ID; Matt Schultz Demands Answer

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 07:00 AM PDT

mattschultz Council Bluffs, Iowa – September 15, 2010 – Councilman Matt Schultz won a competitive primary in June to become the Republican nominee for Iowa Secretary of State. Schultz largely credits his success to the fact that he supports a law requiring all voters to show a Photo ID before they vote.

Michael Mauro has made several media appearances recently including Iowa Press and the radio show Max World Live where he discusses Photo ID legislation.

"Michael Mauro is lying about Iowa law and a Photo ID. Mauro has been telling half truths when referring to Photo ID requirements. He has implied that showing a Photo ID when you register to vote on Election Day means that everyone has to show a Photo ID before they vote. This is not true," said Schultz.

Only voters who register to vote at the polls on Election Day have to show a Photo ID. In the June primary less than 1% of people registered on Election Day requiring them to show a Photo ID. That means 99% of voters did not have to show a Photo ID before they cast their vote.

"My opponent cannot hide the fact that he opposes Photo ID legislation. I am the only candidate running for Secretary of State who believes that everyone should show a Photo ID before they vote. It is time for Michael Mauro to come clean and admit that he is against everyone showing a Photo ID before they vote at the polls," said Schultz.

Councilman Schultz points to the fact that Michael Mauro is financially supported by the Secretary of State Project, a liberal organization funded by individuals like George Soros. The Secretary of State Project opposes Photo ID legislation and only supports candidates who agree with their positions. The Secretary of State Project outlines its positions on the 2010 races page of their website at this link http://ow.ly/1qRkfX.

Matt Schultz was first elected to the Council Bluffs City Council in 2005 and is in his second term. Matt Schultz won the Republican nomination for Secretary of State in a three way primary in June. He is a graduate of Creighton Law School and the University of Iowa. Matt is married with three children and is an Attorney at the law firm of Schultz & Watson, LLP.
