Have You Signed The Plank One Petition? Tell the GOP Leadership to Keep Social Issues on the Agenda

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 09:30 PM PDT

imageThe American Principles Project, Susan B. Anthony List and American Values are co-sponsoring Plank 1 in order to send a message to Republican leadership to put principles first since the GOP leadership is on the verge of taking central social issues out of their agenda.

Plank 1 states:

Our nation is only as strong as its core components: families, neighborhoods, churches and other religious communities, marriage and the voluntary associations of many types that make for a vibrant civil society.  We will act to:

Protect religious liberty and celebrate the role of religious institutions in the formation of our nation's most cherished and most basic principles;

Move strongly toward the nationwide reversal of abortion on demand, by enacting a permanent, comprehensive "Hyde amendment" restrictions on abortion funding; enacting comprehensive and enforceable conscience protections; protecting the notification and consent right of parents regarding their minor children; banning all forms of human cloning; and increasing support of ethical and effective alternatives to embryo-destructive experimentation;

Protect marriage as the union of husband and wife, recognizing that children do best with a married mother and father and that our laws and our judges should respect and defend this most fundamental institution of society;

Protect the right of parents to direct the upbringing of their children and strengthen parental options to choose and finance the education of their children;

Preserve the Innocence of our children by increasing parental and local control over sex and civics education and by promoting abstinence education programs;

Preserve and strengthen "charitable choice" provisions that protect religious nonprofits;

Reform anti-poverty programs to ensure that they encourage personal development, work, and the marriage-based family;

Protect public recognition of our nation's trust in God as the Author of our unalienable rights and freedoms;

Honor those who have died and those who have fought for our right and liberty.

Today they delivered the petition with 20,000 signatures to Capitol Hill.  Presser below:

Matt Schultz: Mauro Wants To Have His Cake and Eat It Too

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 06:30 AM PDT

image Council Bluffs, Iowa – September 16, 2010 – Michael Mauro accused Republican Secretary State Candidate Matt Schultz of not understanding the law or deliberately misleading Iowans after Schultz accused Mauro of lying about Iowa Photo ID requirements.

Matt Schultz recognizes that voters must show identification if they vote using Same-Day Voter Registration as well as if they are considered inactive voters. Voters registering on Election Day and voting accounted for less than 1% of those who cast a vote in the June Primary election. Schultz's plan is to REQUIRE ALL voters to show a Photo ID when they vote at the polls, not just a small number of voters.

"I understand the law, apparently better than our current Secretary of State. I don't know what crib notes Mr. Mauro uses when he studies election law, but I read the Iowa Code. I think it is time he open up the Iowa Code, because nowhere in the Iowa statutes does it REQUIRE ALL voters to show a Photo ID when they vote at the polls," said Schultz.

Mauro has stated on several occasions that Iowans already must show a Photo ID when they vote. He claims that Iowa Code Section 49.77 and Iowa Code Section 48A are evidence of this fact.

"I am disappointed that Mauro will not be honest about his positions on a Photo ID, but that is politics as usual, the kind of tactics that come from an entrenched incumbent who is part of the Des Moines Democratic Machine. He just wants to have his cake and eat it too by misleading voters about Iowa law to make it look like he supports a Photo ID, when he really opposes Photo ID legislation."
