| Governor Huckabee Gets Ringing Endorsement by Citizens United Founders. Posted: 11 Feb 2011 04:20 AM PST
In a very recent article in Townhall Magazine (online), the Browns tell of their trip to Israel with Governor Mike Huckabee. They came away from the trip believing that he should be the next president of the United States. They cited his compassion, warmth of character and demeanor, and described him as unflappable. This is an important and early endorsement for the former Governor of Arkansas, should he decide to run. | Everybody Knows Except for Mike Huckabee Posted: 11 Feb 2011 01:11 AM PST Steve Deace of WHO Radio in Des Moines knows. Craig Robinson of the Iowa Republican knows. Erik Erikson of Red State (who is also a talk show host at Radio WSB in Atlanta) knows. The Des Moines Register used to know. What do they know that Governor Mike Huckabee doesn't know? That he isn't running for president in 2012. Every one of the above has run polls or made predictions about how each of a number of candidates will fare during the upcoming Presidential primary/caucus season. Each has left out Governor Huckabee, even though he continues to lead when polled for favorability, and when in national or many state horse races. Do they do this because he has announced he is not running? No, they don't. The only announcement made was that he wouldn’t make a decision until summer's approach. How do they know, then? These soothsayers use eight kinds of divination…. Halomancy – Divination using salt Some pundits know, based on his diet, Huckabee isn't running. Seriously, they think he isn't running because he has put on a few pounds? Tell that to Chris Christie in New Jersey. Uranomancy – Divination by consulting the heavens Some of these folks are certain the stars have not aligned for Huckabee. They are able to take any poll and make the worst of it. For example, for the longest time Huckabee was leading polls only in conservative, "red" states, mostly in the south. This was proof he can't reach out to the moderates and independents and therefore he won't run. Recent polls show he has done well in California and New Jersey. This is proof now he isn't running because he is too moderate to win the GOP nomination. Capnomancy – Divination by smoke Some people can't understand or control Mike Huckabee. If he doesn't do things the way they think he ought, it is obvious he has no presidential ambitions. Take for example, the claim by some that if the Governor really wanted to win in 2012, he would participate in this week's CPAC convention. Never mind that he has already given principled reasons why he isn't going to participate. Even some former supporters are getting antsy. Mike Huckabee is a fun guy to have in Iowa; reporters love him. They hope they can goad him into coming to Iowa or their state more frequently. Six Stops in February in Iowa isn't enough. Keraunoscopia – Divination using thunder Mike Huckabee isn't running because his wife won't let him. And bad decisions on pardons will continue to haunt him. The talk show hosts are against him. He has a bad reputation with fiscal conservatives. He is too religious and wants to turn the whole country into Taliban II. Besides the slander that most of this involves, it is mostly wishful thinking. It is hearing what his opponents want to hear. Ailuromancy – Divination by studying a cat’s jump Apparently there was some miscommunication between Governor Huckabee and Bob Vander Plaats, who announced last week that Governor Huckabee would be the speaker in the FAMiLY Matters lecture series in June. Others are certain his cruise to Alaska is proof he won't run. His book tour in Iowa and South Carolina only means he can sell books there, not that he is reaching out to potential voters. Botanomancy – Divination using plants The former governor has moved to Florida. And he is building a big 2-3 million dollar house and obviously he can't pay that off and run for president. But who know what other arrangements he has made to pay it off. The talk show hosts don't know. But they have read the tea leaves. Others are sure that he won't run because every single campaign aide that could possibly help him in Iowa has already committed to other candidates. (The truth is that very few movers and shakers have publicly committed to other candidates, none of whom have announced). Enoptromancy – Divination using a mirror These are the folks who can't imagine they would ever give up a lucrative TV deal and all the money that goes with it. And that is doubly true for the the Hick from Arkansas, who can't resist the filthy lucre. They don't see his character, however; they only see their own. Extispicy – Divination using entrails This is the dissecting that goes on, and the gut feeling they get, as if they knew what was going on inside the belly of Governor Huckabee. They read recently that he paid off a few small lingering debts and closed his 2008 Huckabee for President organization and now they know he is not running. Some of these things may be legitimate reasons to speculate he may not be running. And it is certainly fine to make guesses or predictions. But to say you know for sure? I won't play the game and say I know he is going to run for president. I don't know one way or the other. Maybe he doesn't know yet. And you don't need salt, a telescope, smoke, thunder, plants, mirrors, cats, or entrails to see that is a possibility. | Steve Deace resigns from WHO afternoon radio show Posted: 11 Feb 2011 01:00 AM PST
Deace resigned Jan. 28, but stayed on the air for two more weeks at the request of WHO. Deace says the decision to leave the award-winning radio station was not an easy one. "WHO is one of the best stations in the United States, and I feel truly honored and blessed to have been allowed to play at least some small part in that legacy," Deace said. "Many industry professionals would consider WHO a destination job, and WHO has been very good to my family and invaluable to my growth both as a broadcaster and as a man. I hope my performance and work ethic repaid the investment WHO made in me and my family." Deace said it was time for him to move on to pursue other opportunities. "My wife and I have been sensing for months now that perhaps God had something new in store for us," Deace said. "Now we're going to take the necessary steps to see exactly what that looks like and we're excited about the journey." Deace says he is making this decision completely on his own. "No members of management at WHO pressured me or asked me to resign and no members of management at WHO ever has," Deace said. "In fact, they urged me to reconsider. It seemed they were just as surprised by my decision as many in my audience will be. I am very grateful General Manager Joel McCrea gave me the opportunity to broadcast at WHO and KXNO the last eight and a half years." Deace said he'll miss the relationships he forged during his years at WHO the most. "I'm not sure how it's possible for a broadcaster to have a better relationship with his program director than I was blessed to have with Van Harden," Deace said. "Van is not just a talented broadcaster and beloved community figure, but over the years he's become a trusted mentor spiritually and professionally as well as a genuine friend. The same is true of Jan Mickelson as well, who is one of the most gracious people you'll ever meet. Losing the regular rapport I've enjoyed with people like them and several others at WHO is probably the hardest part of this decision." Program Director Van Harden said Deace will be missed. "While this came as a surprise to us, we at WHO want all to know this is a very friendly parting," Harden said. "I’ve called Steve up to the plate three times, twice for KXNO and once for WHO. All three times he’s scored big for us, and we should all be thankful for that." Deace is now looking forward to seeing what the future holds. "I hope to have a book published later this year and I've been approached in the past about pursuing politics which is intriguing," Deace said. "On the other hand, I certainly love radio and since a first-class and highly successful operation like WHO was willing to employ my talents I think I have a knack for it, so I'm open to more broadcasting in the future. As of today I have had no other contact with any other radio stations regarding this decision nor have I pursued any. I'm stepping out on faith here to see what exactly God has in store for me in the future either way. "I am very thankful as I look back over the opportunities I've had to be associated with a station as historic as WHO, and to perhaps have played a small role in the discussions that have shaped our state. My wife and I have set down roots here in Iowa and hope to raise our children here. We don't plan on going anywhere. We look forward to seeing how we will have the privilege to fear God, tell the truth and make money in the future." Steve Deace, 37, resides in West Des Moines with his wife, Amy, and their three children: Anastasia, 9; Zoe, 5; and Noah-Andrew, 4. Steve can be contacted via Facebook, "@deaceradio" on Twitter, and Steve@stevedeace.com. | Congresswoman Kristi Noem at CPAC: Don’t Just Complain, Do Something Posted: 10 Feb 2011 11:00 PM PST I figured everybody and their brother was blogging about the big name keynote speakers at CPAC so I wanted to watch the CPAC speech (need free registration) given by a neighbor to the north, Freshman Congresswoman Kristi Noem (R-SD). I have heard a little about her before, and I took time to visit her website before watching. I think we have a rising star on our hands. She wasn't flashy giving her speech, but she was down to earth and I believe we need more people like that in Congress. She talked about growing up in South Dakota on her family's farm. Her dad whom she identified as a Cowboy was killed at the age of 49 in an accident on their farm. She came from college to help take manager their operation. She said that they were hit hard by the estate tax. They had to choose as many farmers do in that circumstance to sell land or take out a loan. She said her Dad always said that you never sell land. She went on to say, "I don't know if anyone has ever told you, but they aren't making any more land." She said her service was sparked by something her dad had said, "you can't just complain about something that is happening, you need to do something about it." She said her experiences on her family farm, and the hardships they faced (she said it took 1o years to pay off the loan for the estate tax) led her to service. She ran for the South Dakota House and won in 2006. For the last two years she has been the Assistant Majority Leader in the South Dakota House of Representatives. Not complaining, but doing let this farming and ranching mom of three to run for Congress. She only announced a year ago she was running and now she joins a freshman class of 87 Republican Representatives. She noted 37 of which has never held public office. She said to much applause describing her decision to run, "maybe we need common, everyday, ordinary people serving." She received even greater applause when she said, "a lot of us freshman don't have a lot of knowledge about the way Washington operates and frankly we don't really care." She said her class wants to be historic not just in numbers, but in delivering results for the American people. I hope they succeed. | American Principles in Action: Iowans Deserve Their Religious Liberties Protected Posted: 10 Feb 2011 02:30 PM PST While HSB 50 has been shelved, work toward religious liberty must go on. Des Moines, IA – American Principles in Action believes Iowans must have their religious liberty protected. We don't believe that HSB 50, the "Religious Conscience Protection Act" that failed to make it out its subcommittee yesterday had the language necessary to do that. We believe the focus on marriage made a law that should have bipartisan support, more divisive than it should be. Our desire is that Iowa adopt language similar to other states* that have passed laws protecting religious liberty. We simply want to see the standard that has historically protected religious freedom restored – the "compelling state interest" test. The state should have to justify burdens placed on religious liberty. This law would simply ensure that these liberties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and the Iowa Constitution are protected, but unfortunately in recent years that protect has diminished at both the federal and state level. Protection, for instance, for orthodox Jews who could be forced to submit their loved ones to an autopsy or Catholic health care workers whose employment would be a risk because of religious-based refusals to perform abortions. So while HSB 50 has been shelved we challenge our state's lawmakers to continue to work toward religious liberty protection. *States that have passed Religious Freedom Restoration Acts are Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
