Ron Paul Condems Obama’s Decision to Abandon DOMA

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 05:00 PM PST

LAKE JACKSON, TX – Congressman Ron Paul issued the following statement in response to Attorney General Eric Holder's announcement that the Obama Administration will cease to defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) against legal challenges.

"The Defense of Marriage Act was enacted in 1996 to stop Big Government in Washington from re-defining marriage and forcing its definition on the States. Like the majority of Iowans, I believe that marriage is between one man and one woman and must be protected.

"I supported the Defense of Marriage Act, which used Congress’ constitutional authority to define what other states have to recognize under the Full Faith and Credit Clause, to ensure that no state would be forced to recognize a same sex marriage license issued in another state. I have also cosponsored the Marriage Protection Act, which would remove challenges to the Defense of Marriage Act from the jurisdiction of the federal courts.

"The people of Iowa overwhelmingly supported, both houses of the Legislature passed, and the Governor signed into law the Iowa Defense Of Marriage Act in 1998.  Iowans then valiantly recalled three activist Judges who spurned the will of the people by over-turning the state's law.

"Today's announcement that the Obama Administration will abandon its obligation to enforce DOMA is truly disappointing and shows a profound lack of respect for the Constitution and the Rule of Law. President Obama has just unconstitutionally said that Iowa should have to allow San Francisco and New York City decide its marriage laws. That position is unacceptable.

"The Administration's dereliction throws the door wide open for special interests to abuse Federal power and attempt to force Iowa to recognize non-traditional marriage. Upcoming battles are looming just over the horizon.

"I will stand with the people of Iowa, against Unconstitutional federal power grabs, and will fight to protect each state’s right not to be forced to recognize a same sex marriage against the will of its people. If I were a member of the Iowa legislature, I would do all I could to oppose any attempt by rogue judges to impose a new definition of marriage on the people of my state."

Sarah Palin Wins On National Security, Mitt Romney Hurts On Social Issues

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 03:04 PM PST

As reported in Time Online.

“Mitt Romney still does badly among those who social issues as the biggest issue in 2012, as does Newt Gingrich. Perhaps more surprising, Sarah Palin wins among those voters who see national security and foreign policy as the most important issue” reports Michael Scherer

There is no doubt that Palin supporters are smiling like Cheshire cats seeing this. Spending, economy and social issues numbers can be addressed by Palin later, but the big risk for a female candidate is whether she can be seen as “tough enough” to be President. It looks like she is surpassing expectations by her doubters so far.

You also have to feel bad for the other three in the poll, national security is the one area that has to be tough being “beaten by a girl”.

Canadian thoughts on Col. Gaddafi

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 01:39 PM PST

Rev. D. Douglas Gebbie, a pastor with the Presbyterian Reformed Church in Chesley, Ontario and contributor at Caffeinated Theology, suggested that I post these links:

Self-delusion can have a powerful hold. Fans of the UN appear to have a particularly virulent strain. Muammar Gaddafi may not have long left as ruler of Libya, but, whatever the outcome, you can bet the UN won't have had much to do with it.

The UN puts down its tea cup, issues a stern tongue-lashing to that bad Col. Gaddafi

Canadians shaking their heads in disbelief that such a monster is still in power should be aware of our own role in keeping him there.

Embracing Gaddafi was Canada’s shame

Support Iowa House File 167–Independent Accreditation for Iowa’s Private Schools

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 10:00 AM PST

The Iowa Association of Christian Schools introduced HF 167 with the help of Representative Jason Schultz (R-Schleswig) and Representative Cecil Dolecheck (R-Mount Ayr). This legislation passed out of House subcommittee and will now go to the full House Education Committee for consideration! A special thank you to Representatives Dolecheck and Josh Byrnes (R-Osage) for signing off on the bill in subcommittee. Organizations speaking against the bill in subcommittee included the Iowa State Education Association, School Administrators of Iowa, the Iowa Association of School Boards, and the Interfaith Alliance. AFSCME also registered against the bill. The FAMiLY Leader and the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition along with our friends at the American Principles Project have joined us in supporting the bill. PLEASE go here and email your Representative and any members of the House education committee you are willing to contact and ask them to pass HF 167 out of Committee before the "funnel" deadline of March 4!

Here is some background: Iowa is one of only three states that we know of that offers a state government accreditation for private schools. We are the only state that we know of that requires that government accreditation to participate in any programs, appropriations, or regulations that would help level the playing field and make a high-quality private education available to all Iowa parents.

For decades this arrangement with the state worked in the sense that the State was willing to tread lightly on private schools and respect private school's unique role and mission as private or religious education organizations. The State is becoming increasingly involved in social issues; addressing an understandable pressure to address an increasing number of issues in schools.

State accreditation should no longer be the sole option for private schools in the state. We'll be working with other coalition partners to ensure that private schools secure the option to obtain accreditation from regional or national accrediting bodies that better understand and respect the role and mission of our schools while maintaining our status as "accredited" schools under the law.

Rick Santorum: Obama’s Refusal to Defend DOMA is an Affront to the Will of the People

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 08:30 AM PST

Washington, DC – Former Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) issued the following statement in response to President Obama's announcement that his administration will no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act in court:

"When the definition of marriage has been put before the people, they have time and time again – from Maine to California – stood up in defense of the traditional family.  President Obama's refusal to defend a law that was overwhelmingly supported on both sides of the aisle and signed into law by a president of his own party is an affront to the will of the people.  This is yet another example of our president's effort to erode the very traditions that have made our country the greatest nation on earth, and it begs the question what language changed in the constitution since 2008 to reverse his position," Santorum stated.
