Mike Huckabee Target of Protests Posted: 05 Apr 2011 03:13 AM PDT I’m not sure what opponents of Mike Huckabee want him to do. Lie and tell former staff members that he has already decided to run for president, but that they are to be quiet and not tell anybody so that he doesn’t get fired from Fox News? Lie and tell former staff members he has decided not to run, but that they should keep quiet about that, too? Do they want him to decide to get in this week and actually be the first serious candidate to announce, and thereby lose his gigs on Fox News and ABC Radio? More viewers and listeners are exposed to Governor Huckabee in one week in these forums than all of the other potential candidates have gotten in all of their campaign appearances so far this year combined. What is particularly funny is to hear this "advising" from supporters of Sarah Palin and Mitt Romney. I think those two "candidates" have visited Iowa a total of about 3 times between the two of them since the 2008 election. And while their supporters have admitted they must compete in Iowa, nobody has advised them that the approach they've taken has been "horrible" and an "incredibly bad move". If Huckabee continues to poll well, it will not be difficult to find experienced staff in Iowa and elsewhere to help him organize once he gets in. I think the insider mentality, believing that only certain people like Wes Enos or I've-Forgotten-His-Name can help run a campaign, is really what the Tea Party movement is out to oppose. It is not the staff that runs the campaign, it is the candidate. If he runs, Huckabee has shown he knows how to campaign. And THAT is what his opponents worry about most – not that he will not get in soon enough, it is that he will get in at just the right moment. Someone has said, that if Huckabee is not in a debate, it is not debate. That, of course, is an exaggeration. But did anybody else notice how the Ronald Reagan Library debate was moved from May to September? Is it any coincidence that the debate will be held after Huckabee announces? Share and Enjoy: |
Rand Paul: We Need “Bold Leadership” Posted: 04 Apr 2011 08:43 PM PDT Senator Rand Paul spoke at the Iowa GOP "Night of the Rising Stars" event in Des Moines on Saturday. There was no podium used by any of the speakers, and Senator Paul spoke without the benefit of notes. Nonetheless he spoke in some detail about a number of subjects, frequently using historical anecdotes to make his points. He recalled a debate he had with Iowa Senator Tom Harkin on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Harkin insisted that quality products were impossible to make without union labor. Paul listened incredulously, and explained to Harkin that most of the groceries that he bought at his local grocery store were not made by union workers. He told the crowd he didn't think he "got anywhere" with his argument. He spent some time discussing Senator Henry Clay, the Kentucky Senator from the 19th century who was known as the "Great Compromiser". Senator Paul said that compromise can be a "misplaced ideal", and went on to tell the story of Henry Clay's cousin Cassius Marcellus Clay, the uncompromising abolitionist, who fought for what he thought was right, and "didn't take the easy way out". He spoke about the history of the Boston small pox epidemic of 1721 and the history of small pox inoculation to illustrate the courage required to move forward on things when to do so may run against popular opinion. He suggested this kind of leadership has been missing in Washington, singling out President Obama. He also suggested that some of the issues we face today have the "moral equivalency" of slavery and the "urgency" of the small pox epidemic. He then asked rhetorically if we will be judged for not protecting the unborn. Paul remarked that with regard to spending, we have trillions in deficits but were only considering billions in cuts. He suggested that the amount being discussed for cuts only amounted to 3 days worth of spending. He said he was concerned that we were headed for a "day of fiscal reckoning", and that day had been moved up as a result of the disasters in Japan. He spoke of Ronald Reagan's life, legacy, and optimism. He said we need bold leadership like that. We need to "get government out of the way". Turning to recent events in Libya, Paul said we should vote on military action. He recalled that President George W. Bush at least did that. The UN is not more important than the United States Congress, he said. He also asserted that we're (the United States) exceptional because of our constitution. He said that divided power is important. It provides checks and balances. Military action is something that we need to debate, and he hopes to “force such a debate”. Share and Enjoy: |
Mike Huckabee Opting Out of 2012 or Just Content Losing Former Iowa Staff? Posted: 04 Apr 2011 03:19 PM PDT I know, I know people will say… he hasn't made a decision yet. He told me as much a couple of weeks ago. I know also he seems to be listening to Bob Vander Plaats' horrible advice to wait it out after the Ames Straw Poll. That is awfully late to be getting into Iowa to play here and I believe he needs to have Iowa in his strategy. So how are we to discern what we see on the ground in Iowa?
His Iowa staff is gone, gone, gone… So he's either not running or he's ok with that which seems to me to be an incredibly bad move. Photo by Dave Davidson Share and Enjoy: |
Republican 2012 Presidential Hopefuls Demand Full Defunding of Planned Parenthood Posted: 04 Apr 2011 10:30 AM PDT Susan B. Anthony List contacted several Presidential candidates to see where they stood on defunding Planned Parenthood. They included those statements, along with public remarks already made by other candidates: Governor Haley Barbour (R-AL): "I support a halt to any federal funds going to America’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood." (Statement provided to SBA List) Former Governor Mike Huckabee (R-AR): "We need to demand this Congress vote to defund Planned Parenthood. Our tax dollars should never be used to provide abortions and our government should put an end to it immediately." (Statement provided to SBA List) Former Governor Sarah Palin (R-AK): "I join Rep. Mike Pence and others of conscience and common sense who are leading the charge to end the taxpayer funding of the nation’s largest abortion provider. We recognize that not only is our country buried under Mt. McKinley-sized debt, but that the truest measure of any society is how it treats those who are least able to defend and speak for themselves." (Statement provided to SBA List) Former Governor Tim Pawlenty (R-MN): "Washington has a massive spending problem, and we need to set priorities. Recent undercover videos show that employees of America’s largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood, aided alleged human traffickers wishing to exploit young girls. Yet, they continue to receive significant taxpayer funding. That should come to an end." (statement provided to SBA List, April 1, 2011) Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN): "…one thing that we can do, quite simply, is to withhold funding from Planned Parenthood." (CNS News, "Rep. Michele Bachmann: De-Fund Planned Parenthood," December 6, 2010) Former Godfathers' Pizza CEO and Radio Host Herman Cain: "I absolutely would defund Planned Parenthood…people who know the history of Margaret Sanger, who started Planned Parenthood, they know that the intention was not to help young women who get pregnant to plan their parenthood. No — it was a sham to be able to kill black babies." –www.renewamerica.com/columns/fischer/110118 Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA): "…I want to say I strongly endorse his cutting out all funding for Planned Parenthood which has become a major source of abortion in America." (Speech at Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition, March 7, 2011) Former Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA): "Mitt Romney supports the Pence amendment." (NRO, "The Defunding of Planned Parenthood Litmus Test?" April 2, 2010) Former Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA): "If you look at Planned Parenthood; if you look at the abortion industry…they fight every single regulation every single bit of information that should be given to the patient, they all fight it as an affront to the right of abortion." (Family Talk with Dr. James Dobson, February 24, 2011) It's good to see Presidential candidates weighing in on this issue as I'm sure President Obama and Senate Democrats will go to bat for taxpayer money going to this corrupt organization. I'm pretty confident of each candidate on this issue as it is also a fiscal issue. I do find it interesting that Ron Paul was left off the list though. I'm pretty sure where he stands though, I can't possibly see him being in favor of funding Planned Parenthood. I'm going to contact his office and see if I can't get a statement from him. I'll update later. Update: Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX): "As a father, Christian and Obstetrician, I find it shameful that our government uses the tax dollars of citizens to fund planned Planned Parent. This is why I am an original cosponsor the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act (HR 217). I have also introduced the Taxpayers' Freedom of Conscience Act (HR 1099), legislation prohibiting any federal official from spending any federal funds for any population control or population planning program or any family planning activity." Barack Obama Launches 2012 Re-election Bid: “It begins with us” Posted: 04 Apr 2011 08:13 AM PDT Monday morning president Obama officially launched his re-election bid with a video and is expected to file official paperwork with the Federal Election Commission later today. Obama also sent an email to his supporters explaining that they need to begin organizing block by block for his re-election campaign. He also lays out his plan to raise 1 Billion dollars for his re-election. Starting the campaign early allows him to begin that fundraising effort. The video ends with “It begins with us”, possibly his new campaign slogan, if so I may cause many to question why his “Change” didn’t begin 2 years ago. Politifact has a listing of campaign promises that have been broken, here are a few:
He also promised to end the war in Iraq, Politifact considers this a kept promise, because we have ended “combat operations” but with 50,000 troops remaining in the country it sure feels like we are still at war. He has also promised to being withdrawing troops in Afghanistan this summer, a promise that appears to be in jeopardy. Share and Enjoy: |
